Games I Beat in 2025: #10 – Return to Ash

I thought this was the same dev as Bad End Theater, but now that I look, it was just an available bundle? I don’t know. Fact-checking? I’m not paid to do that.

But since it was a bundle, I picked up the two and played Return to Ash the day after finishing Bad End Theater. Similarly, there are four characters, but it’s more of a “Classic” visual novel. You make choices here and there, and that impacts what endings you get. While it lacks the unique toggle system that Bad End Theater had, this was a touching story of a young woman who had spent the past seven years of her life in a hospital, and died. Now in purgatory, she needs to figure out how to get back to life. And she can’t do it alone. Or can she? Death and the other two wandering around the otherwise abandoned building interact and work things out. Or don’t. Again, it’s a visual novel. I’m sure you know how these do.

It was fairly short, but didn’t feel like too much of a pain in the ass to get all six endings. Well, and if I understand the ending list correctly, there are three ways to get one of the endings, and I only got two of them. But I’m satisfied enough.

The writing was pretty good. Some parts felt a little… what’s the word… trying? Heavy-handed? But overall, not bad. Enjoyable. A nice little treat on these hot summer days. It’ll stick with me for a while, for sure. If it’s on sale, and you enjoy VNs, I’d say give it a whirl.
