"Aw, don't you want to make friends?" Sally asked the angry man.
Sally is a Dwarf Shield Mage. Yes, she’s a Dwarf. The tallest that has ever lived in Vara Elma. Why? Throughout her childhood, she was told it was a curse placed upon her family. The truth? She may never know.
Sally is in a relationship with another of the main characters, Yrlith. Writing a lesbian couple was an explicit choice I made. I wanted to challenge myself to write something I don’t know, and keep it respectful. The feedback I have gotten on them makes me happy.
Honestly, it’s not hard. Write them as people.
I enjoy writing them because the story picks up several years into their relationship. None of that will they/won’t they stuff that I never cared for in media. Here’s a couple with the problems that couples have. On top of that, do the people of Vara Elma have more issues with them being an interracial or same-sex couple? Or do they have no issues at all? I had to think about all of these as I wrote them, and while I didn’t want to delve too far into trope territory, some things happen, whether we like it or not.
Sally’s parents want grandchildren. She couldn’t be any less interested. Does she owe her parents anything? Some (myself included) would say no, but tradition is not an easy thing to fight against.
